Swindon is a town that holds much for those interested in railway history – being the location choosen by the GWR to establish their locomtive works.
Following a request by Dad to get some photographs of one of the locomotives in the Swindon Steam musuem, we decided it was a chance to catch up if he came up by train and met me in the museum.
Swindon Steam museum is a fantastic museum with wonderful displays of railway engineering, but also covering many facets of the railway life, from the conditions of the workers to the construction of the line.
I spent several hours going around the museum before dad arrived, and we then enjoyed exploring the locomotives on display.
Situated in one of the original works buildings the museum maintains a great character, which is complemented by the Outlet stores next door that use the remainder of the sites in a sympathetic way that holds the original character.
Well worth a visit – the only down side is the state of the current Swindon mainline station – the contrast in building styles from the 18th century to the 1970’s block….I leave it there.
