On my way to North Berwick, but a day to spare, so a trip to Beamish is in order. My younger brother has gone to work, so I decided to walk to Beamish from Houghton-le-spring, 6.5 miles there, and 6.5 miles back. Running late with my departure time, I walked at speed, to get to Beamish for the opening time.
The reason for my hurry, to see a locomotive linked to Annabel’s family. Annabel’s ancestors used to run a railway contractor, building various railway sections, and as part of this, they owned a number of locomotives, one of, which is preserved and happened to be a Beamish for the their transport weekend.
As luck would have it, Beamish were having a crew assessment day, as no trains on the Rowley section had been run since before Covid, and I was fortunate enough to watch some of the trains go up and down.
A wonderful day at Beamish as always, with the added bonus of viewing a Hemmingway locomotive.
Walking back home, I followed the old railway down to Chester-le-street, and then detoured up to Houghton-le-spring.
Couple of games in the evening, a very relaxed few days.
