Today was the epitome of why our adventure is so worthwhile. Lewes had been recommended as a town to visit, and this was the first day when dogs and work permitted a chance to go further afield then East Grinstead, or Pooh Forest for that matter.
We walked the dogs first thing, before we drove down to the small town of Lewes.
Lewes we quickly found out is a town with a lot to interest anyone who likes beer, history and independent shops and the fact it was free Christmas parking made our visit one we could just relax and enjoy, without having to check our watches every five minutes – it didn’t take long for us to start enjoying ourselves, as we wondered around the modern, and historic, parts of the town.
We browsed the shops and stumbled across Harvey’s Brewery with its traditional style building, tall brick chimney and antique cars – it was lovely to see a business that held on to its past, while marketing itself in the modern world. We toured the brewery shop, but sadly with car keys in hand, I couldn’t taste.
From the brewery we walked around the town, heading up to the castle, and looking at the fine architecture of the buildings that formed the high-street. Annabel enjoyed the opportunity to Christmas shop in stores that at least looked different to the run of the mill.
We returned to our dogs about 3.30, before wondering out for a meal in the Swan Hotel in Forest Row. A lovely day, with good food, and good explore and lovely company.
